Chances are if you’re reading this, ordering from us, or enjoying cannabis in general, you’re more than likely to either smoke, or have smoked a joint. C’mon now we all have. But did you know that no two kinds of rolling papers are the same?
For example, one might be made of another kind of paper, or use a different kind of natural gum adhesive as the “sticky” to close your canna flowers inside your rollie of choice.
Types of Rolling Papers
Ah, the classic. Hemp papers come in a variety of brands, the most notable of all being Raw. In my mind, there is no better compliment to cannabis than rolling with something made from cannabis; love it! Most hemp papers are relatively thin, and usually come in a caramel brown colour. Also, they are slightly transluscent. Hemp papers are made by using the Hemp stalk’s inner fibrous core. Pulverizing the pulp into a slurrish paste, and then pressing that mixture to the desired thinness. After this, the papers go through bleaching, branding, and gumming, and packaging.
Bleaching of hemp papers remove its natural caramel colour for a translucent white colour. Now, here’s an interesting fact: One acre of hemp can produce in one season what four acres of trees can produce in 20 years . So, think about how green the Earth would be if we stopped foolishly deforesting and switched to more sustainable means of paper production like hemp, or rice.
Certain brands of rolling papers, such as Swan or Elements, use rice to power their papers. This process is similar to how companies use hemp to make their rolling papers. In short, the stalks of the rice straw are pulverized to access the cellulose rich fibers, that then go through boiling in a caustic solution to pulpiness . The pulp is then processed to perfection. According to the U.S. Library of Medicine,
With a worldwide annual availability of 580 million tons, rice straw is an annually renewable, abundant, and cheap source for natural cellulose fibers. Using rice straw for high-value fibrous applications will help to add value to the rice crops, provide a sustainable resource for fibers, and also benefit the environment .
The information is out there. Rice is another sustainable solution to mankind’s paper problem, as well as being awesome rolling papers! Papers made from rice are usually thin, but not quite as thin as Raw Blacks persay, which are the thinnest hemp rolling papers yet. Rice papers brands, more specifically Elements, make their gums out of sugar, rather than Acacia gums . For example, brands like Raw use Acacia. Both of which have been deem healthy by the cannabis community. Unlike other brands that opt for gums from animals and animal byproducts, yuck. Power to the plants! And speaking of plants, some dope heads in France figured out how to use flax to make some dope papers.
Colt 45 and two Zig Zags, baby that’s all we need.
We can go to the park after dark, smoke that tumbleweed.
And as the marijuana burns we can take our turns,
Singing them dirty rap songs
Stop and hit the bong like Cheech and Chong,
Sell tapes from here to Hong Kong.
So roll, roll, roll my joint.
Pick out the seeds and stems.
Feelin’ high as hell flyin’ through Palmdale, skatin’ on Dayton rims.
It sounds like Afroman needed some High Grade Aid, right guys? Either way, Afroman was on to something. Zig Zags are some of the world’s most popular rolling papers, and for good reason. In 1894, they were the first rolling paper brand to introduce interleaving technology. Know how every paper in a package of papers connects to the end of another, so when you pull one out another is ready to be used? Well, you can thank the team at Zig Zag’s for that . They have also been using flax as their main ingredient, blended with wood pulp. Zig Zags are by far our favourite in the rolling paper department, as they are some of the slowest burning papers available.
Flavoured rolling papers
Although the biggest flavoured rolling papers company, Juicy Jays, makes their papers out of hemp, we feel they deserve their own category for how awesome they are. The team at Juicy Jays has created a line of papers that add a special touch of tastiness with every draw. With an abundance of flavours and different sized papers, Juicy Jays is like the Baskin and Robins of the rolling paper world. Their promise to deliver is like so:
The average human has about 10,000 taste buds; however, they’re not all on the tongue. They are under the tongue; some are on the inside of the cheeks; some are on the roof of the mouth. Some can even be found on the lips; that’s why Juicy Papers and Wraps taste so amazingly good. Juicy has 3X more flavor than our bland competitors!
We can vouch for that. Juicy papers are definitely an experience to have in life, and work especially well in pairing. Have some buds with lemon-y terps? Pair with some Mango Jays’ for a tropical blast. Juicy Jays also make great lil stoner gifts to get your buddies as we approach the holiday season.
